How to make things rusty for Primitive look.
So you are ready for the holidays and you are making a bunch of Primitive items or ornies. You want to rust your own items instead of paying for them. First you want to make sure that you buy the cheapest brands you can buy. The more expensive items could have shellac on them and will make the process more time consuming.
NOTE: DO NOT USE BRASS AS BRASS WILL NOT RUST.
Please make sure that you are in a ventilated area, and your kids and pets are not around. I do this in the garage so I do not have to worry about it.
Things you will need: a mask, gloves, and a quart jar
The mixture: 1/2 cup cider vinegar, 1/2 cup bleach, 1 teaspoon salt.
Combine the mixture and pour it in a quart jar, add the items to the jar, and then cover the jar loosely and put in a safe place away from kids and pets. Allow the jar to sit for at least two days.
When you are ready to remove them line a tray with paper towels, pull your items out with a fork, and lay out flat. Allow them to sit in the sun they will begin to rust as they dry. Make sure to keep turning them so they will rust all over the item. And there you have it, have fun and have a super time with your crafts.
